LESSONS:Levels

These are the various levels of swimming lessons available:
Preschool | Beginner I | Beginner II | Beginner III | Advanced Beginner | Competitive

PRESCHOOL
Ages 3-6 years old

Course Objective:

  • Help students feel comfortable in the water
  • Enjoy the water safely

Skills Taught:

  • Personal safety
  • Fully submerge face - 3 seconds
  • Buoyancy/Bobs - 10 bounces
  • Retrieve objects
  • Supported float on back
  • Blow bubbles with face in water
  • Move comfortably through the water
  • Enter/Exit water independently
  • Hold breath - 6 counts
  • Front glide with assistance
  • Front glide - 3 feet
  • Reach and pull arm stroke
  • Supported kicking on front
  • Supported kicking on back

BEGINNER I
6 years and older

Course Objective:

  • Give students success with fundamental skills

Skills Taught:

  • Personal safety
  • Hold breath and fully submerge - 5 seconds
  • Retrieve objects
  • Orientation to deep water
  • Front float - 8 counts
  • Back float with assistance
  • Front glide
  • Front glide with kick - 10 feet
  • Level off from vertical position
  • Rhythmic breathing/bobs - 10 times
  • Arm stroke on front
  • Kicking on front and back
  • Finning on back
  • Arm stroke on front with kick - 15 ft.
  • Stroke on back with kick - 15 ft.
  • Turn over front to back (and reverse)
  • Reaching extension assist from deck

BEGINNER II
6 years and older

Course Objective:

  • Build on skills in level I by providing additional guided practice

Skills Taught:

  • Retrieve object with eyes open, no support in chest deep water
  • Bob 15 times, submerge completely
  • Bob from deep water to side of pool
  • Jump in deep water from side of pool
  • Dive in kneeling or compact position
  • Glide on surface - 15 ft.
  • Glide under water - 15 ft.
  • Coordinate front crawl with side breathing - 20 ft.
  • Tread water - 1 minute
  • Backstroke with kick - 20 ft.
  • Elementary backstroke kick
  • Reverse direction while swimming on front
  • Reverse direction while swimming on back
  • Learn safe diving rules
  • Finning on back

BEGINNER III
6 years and older

Course Objective:

  • Develop confidence in the strokes learned this far and to improve other aquatic skills

Skills Taught:

  • Experiment with buoyancy & floating position
  • Rotary/alternate breathing
  • Dive from stride and standing positions
  • Elementary backstroke - 10 yards
  • Sculling on back - 5 yards/15 seconds
  • Front crawl, alternate breathing - 25 yards
  • Backstroke - 25 yards
  • Sidestroke - teach arms, kick 10 yards
  • Introduction to turning at walls
  • Tread water - 2 minutes
  • Retrieve object from bottom

ADVANCED BEGINNER
appropriate skill level

Course Objective:

  • Coordination and refinement of key strokes
  • Introduction to butterfly
  • Introduction to flip turns

Skills Taught:

  • Alternate breathing
  • Long shallow dive
  • Front crawl - 50 yards
  • Back crawl - 50 yards
  • Breaststroke - 10 yards
  • Sidestroke - 10 yards
  • Elementary Backstroke - 25 yards
  • Butterfly (dolphin kick - 10 yards)
  • Open front turn
  • Open back turn
  • Rules for safe diving from board
  • Recognition of spinal injury
  • Treat water - 2 minutes

COMPETITIVE

Competitive lessons are offered for children on swim team. Three instructors will teach 15 children per session. Instructors will divide registered children into three groups on the first day of the session according to their specific interests and needs.
